Affiliate disclosure: VPN Vetted may earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t change our verdict, and we list the downsides of both. Important ownership note: NordVPN and Surfshark are not fully independent rivals. Surfshark and Nord Security (NordVPN’s parent) finalized a merger agreement in February 2022. Both say they still operate autonomously, with separate infrastructure and product roadmaps (Surfshark, NordVPN). Whichever you choose, your money goes to the same group.

How we review
We compared both services using only their official pages, checked October 3, 2026: pricing pages, server pages, support articles, privacy policies, trust centers and their published audit announcements. Where a vendor makes a claim we can’t check independently, such as “fastest”, we say so rather than repeat it. We haven’t run hands-on speed or leak tests for this comparison.
The two VPNs in brief
NordVPN: best for most people
NordVPN’s case is transparency and scale. The pricing page shows what you’ll pay after the intro period: the 2-year Basic plan is $94.23 for the first 27 months, then $139.08 a year (pricing). On the pricing page (checked October 10, 2026), Basic includes the VPN, scam and phishing protection (DNS-based blocking of ads and malicious domains while connected) and Dark Web Monitor (up to 5 emails); Complete adds a next-gen antivirus (scam, phishing and malware protection plus ad and tracker blocking), a password manager, 1 TB of cloud storage, bank transaction monitoring, personal-data monitoring and call and message protection; Prime adds identity protection. The server network is the bigger of the two at 7,130 servers in 150 countries (servers), and extras include Meshnet (Meshnet) and Double VPN (Double VPN).
Downsides: it costs more than Surfshark at every tier, and the 10-device limit can get tight in a large household.
NordVPN: See the current deal
Surfshark: best for budgets and big households
Surfshark is cheaper on every tier (see the Price table; pricing). Every plan allows unlimited simultaneous devices. Features include an ad and cookie pop-up blocker, split tunneling (Bypasser), Rotating IP and Dynamic MultiHop, with Dedicated IP sold as an add-on (features).
Downsides: Surfshark doesn’t show a renewal price on its pricing page, so the long-term cost is harder to compare. Its network is smaller (4,500+ servers in 100 countries, per Surfshark). The pricing page also doesn’t make clear in plain text which extras come with Starter versus One, so check “View all features” before buying.
Surfshark: See the current deal
Price
| Tier | NordVPN (2-year intro) | Surfshark (27-month intro) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Basic $3.49/mo ($94.23), renews $139.08/yr | Starter $2.49/mo ($67.23), renewal not shown |
| Middle | Complete $4.49/mo ($121.23), renews $219.48/yr | One $2.49/mo ($67.23; “Black Friday deal” as of Oct 12, 2026), renewal not shown |
| Top | Prime $7.49/mo ($202.23), renews $296.28/yr | One+ $4.49/mo ($121.23), renewal not shown |
Surfshark is cheaper up front. NordVPN is the one you can budget for past year two, because it publishes the renewal price. NordVPN’s 1-year Basic plan is $65.88 for the first 12 months, then $139.08 a year. Both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Security features: public Wi-Fi, leaks and tracking
Both apps cover the basics you’d want on a hotel, airport or café network. This is what each one documents on its official pages; we haven’t run our own leak tests, so treat these as vendor claims.
| NordVPN | Surfshark | |
|---|---|---|
| Kill switch | Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux; not activated by default | System-level, “soft” or “strict” mode; iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Linux |
| DNS and IP leak protection | Uses only NordVPN-operated DNS servers; disables most IPv6 traffic | Says it blocks DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leaks |
| Ad and tracker blocking | DNS-based blocking while connected on all plans (Basic: scam and phishing protection); full next-gen antivirus on Complete and Prime | Clean Web; included in all subscriptions |
| Malicious-site blocking | Yes, plus malware scanning of downloads | Yes (malware blocking in Clean Web) |
| Auto-connect on Wi-Fi | Yes, with a trusted-networks exception list | Yes, with a trusted-networks list |
Kill switch. NordVPN says its Kill Switch is not activated by default, so switch it on in settings. On Windows you can pick app-level or system-level, and on Android it relies on the system’s “Always-on VPN” setting (NordVPN). Surfshark’s “soft” mode blocks traffic only if the VPN drops unexpectedly; “strict” blocks it whenever the VPN is off, even after a manual disconnect (Surfshark).
Leaks and tracking. The leak claims in the table come from each vendor’s security page (NordVPN, Surfshark). NordVPN’s next-gen antivirus, shown in the app as “Scam, phishing, and malware protection”, runs even without a VPN connection, but its DNS-based threat blocking only works while you’re connected (NordVPN, pricing). Surfshark’s Clean Web filters in the app only while you’re connected; the browser extension works without the VPN and also blocks cookie pop-ups (Clean Web).
Public Wi-Fi. Auto-connect and trusted networks are documented by NordVPN (auto-connect, trusted networks) and Surfshark (auto-connect, trusted networks). One catch on hotel and airport Wi-Fi: NordVPN’s support says to turn off auto-connect and the kill switch, complete the login page, then reconnect and switch both back on (NordVPN support).
What neither one does. A VPN doesn’t make you anonymous. Surfshark says complete anonymity online “is generally not possible”, and a site you log in to still knows it’s you (Surfshark). NordVPN says a VPN can’t protect you from social engineering, weak passwords or outdated software (NordVPN). Use a password manager, turn on multi-factor authentication and keep your apps updated.
Privacy, audits and ownership

- Jurisdiction: NordVPN operates under Panama’s jurisdiction, which has no mandatory data retention law (NordVPN). Surfshark B.V. is based in Amsterdam, and Surfshark says Dutch law doesn’t oblige it to log (trust center).
- Audits: NordVPN’s sixth no-logs assurance engagement was carried out by Deloitte Lithuania from November 10 to December 12, 2025, under ISAE 3000, and the report is available to customers in Nord Account (NordVPN blog). NordVPN also commissioned Cure53 for a broad security assessment of its apps and infrastructure in May, June and October 2025 (NordVPN blog). Surfshark’s trust center lists Deloitte no-logs audits in 2023 and 2025 (the 2025 one under ISAE 3000), an infrastructure audit by SecuRing completed in December 2025, a SecuRing security assessment of its apps and browser extensions in 2025, and a 2026 Cure53 audit of its infrastructure and its new Dausos protocol (trust center, Surfshark blog). Note that NordVPN’s own servers page still says its no-logs policy was audited “four times”; its newer blog post describes the sixth engagement. Surfshark says its servers run on RAM only (no-logs).
- Ownership: since the 2022 merger, both sit under the Nord Security group. They say they run separate infrastructure and roadmaps, but they aren’t unrelated companies.
Who should pick which
- Pick NordVPN if you want to know the renewal price before you commit, want the larger server footprint, or value the longer record of no-logs verifications.
- Pick Surfshark if you have more than 10 devices, want the lowest intro price, want ad and tracker blocking (Clean Web) on every plan, value the most recent infrastructure audit (Cure53, 2026), or plan to cancel or renegotiate at renewal anyway.
- Pick neither if you want a provider outside the Nord Security group.
Speed isn’t part of this verdict. We haven’t run our own speed tests yet, and both vendors claim to be fast, which we can’t verify.
FAQ
Are NordVPN and Surfshark the same company? They’ve been in the same group since a 2022 merger, though both say they operate autonomously.
Which is cheaper, NordVPN or Surfshark? Surfshark has the lower intro price on every tier ($2.49/mo vs $3.49/mo at entry level). NordVPN shows its renewal prices; Surfshark’s pricing page doesn’t.
Which is faster? We haven’t tested them yet. Both make speed claims, and we’ll publish dated results before declaring a winner.
How many devices can I use? NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous devices. Surfshark allows unlimited.
Have both been audited? Yes. NordVPN has completed six independent no-logs assurance engagements (the latest by Deloitte, report issued December 2025) and a Cure53 security assessment in 2025. Surfshark lists Deloitte no-logs audits in 2023 and 2025, SecuRing audits in 2025 and a Cure53 infrastructure audit in 2026.
Does a VPN make me anonymous? No. It encrypts your traffic so the network you’re on can’t see what you do, and it hides your IP address from the sites you visit. But sites you log in to still know who you are, and it won’t fix weak passwords.
Can I get a refund? Both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Final verdict
For most people, NordVPN is the safer buy: you see the full price including renewal, you get more servers and countries, and it has the longer record of no-logs verifications (Surfshark has the more recent infrastructure audit). Surfshark is the better deal if you’re on a tight budget or need to cover more than 10 devices.
