ExpressVPN is operated by Express Technologies Ltd under British Virgin Islands jurisdiction; its ultimate holding company is Kape Technologies PLC. Where we mention NordVPN or Surfshark as alternatives, note that NordVPN and Surfshark both belong to Nord Security (merged under one holding company in 2022; they say they operate independently).
ExpressVPN prices and offer terms checked October 23, 2026, ~09:12 BRT, on the official US pricing page, in USD, before sales tax. NordVPN and Surfshark alternatives checked the same morning (Surfshark renewals: same-day US capture at 01:14 BRT).
Verdict in 30 seconds
Buy ExpressVPN if you want a premium VPN with a clear Basic / Advanced / Pro ladder, published device limits that rise by tier (10 → 12 → 14), a recent KPMG no-logs assessment you can open after acknowledging auditor terms, and a 30-day money-back window for first-time users. On today’s US page, Basic is $83.72 for the first 28 months, then renews at $99.95 a year — flatter than NordVPN Basic’s jump to $139.08 a year.
Skip ExpressVPN (or pick Basic only) if you need unlimited devices, multi-hop or port forwarding as marketed features (we did not find those on ExpressVPN’s features page today), or the lowest possible bill. Surfshark Starter is $67.23 for 27 months with unlimited devices and renews at $79 a year. NordVPN Complete packs more security extras if you will use them.
Our opinion: ExpressVPN Basic is worth considering when renewal predictability and apps matter more than the absolute cheapest ticket. Advanced and Pro are worth it only if you will use Advanced Protection, ExpressKeys, Identity Defender or ExpressAI — otherwise you are paying for unused add-ons.
What ExpressVPN offers in 2026
ExpressVPN sells three paid tiers on the US pricing page: Basic, Advanced and Express Pro. All three use the same Lightway-forward VPN core and claim servers in 113 countries. The tiers differ mainly by device count, threat-blocking depth, mail aliases, password manager, identity coverage and AI credits.
| Plan | First term (2-year view) | Monthly average (intro) | Devices | Headline extras (provider) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $83.72 for 28 months | $2.99/mo | 10 | Lite Protection; ExpressMailGuard (10 MB + 10 shared aliases); Dedicated IP add-on available |
| Advanced | $125.72 for 28 months | $4.49/mo | 12 | Advanced Protection; ExpressKeys; ExpressMailGuard (100 MB + 50 aliases + 1 custom domain); Identity Defender (alerts, data removal, up to $3M ID theft insurance); holiday.com eSIM 3 GB / 3 days |
| Express Pro | $209.72 for 28 months | $7.49/mo | 14 | Higher Identity Defender (up to $5M); eSIM 3 GB / 5 days; ExpressAI 500 credits/day |
Source: expressvpn.com/pricing, US/USD view, October 23, 2026 ~09:12 BRT. Insurance for Identity Defender is underwritten by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida / Assurant — read the Advanced Tier summary of benefits before you buy. Sales tax may apply at checkout.

The pricing page cards also show a strikethrough “was” total next to the intro bill ($419.72 / $475.72 / $643.72). We cite the amount you pay and the renewal line, not the marketing strikethrough as a guarantee of list price.
ExpressVPN pricing: intro vs renewal
The long intro deal is 28 months (2 years + 4 months). After that, the subscription auto-renews annually at the published rate on the card:
| Plan | You pay upfront | Then renews at |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $83.72 | $99.95/year |
| Advanced | $125.72 | $119.95/year |
| Express Pro | $209.72 | $199.95/year |
Card wording example (Basic): “Billed $83.72 for the first 28 Months. Then autorenews at $99.95 annually.”
Intro plus one year of renewal (our arithmetic, before tax):
- Basic: $83.72 + $99.95 = $183.67 for 40 months (~$4.59/mo).
- Advanced: $125.72 + $119.95 = $245.67 for 40 months (~$6.14/mo).
- Express Pro: $209.72 + $199.95 = $409.67 for 40 months (~$10.24/mo).
For context on the same check day: NordVPN Basic is $94.23 for 27 months then $139.08/year; Surfshark Starter is $67.23 for 27 months then $79/year. ExpressVPN Basic undercuts NordVPN Basic after one renewal; Surfshark Starter undercuts ExpressVPN Basic.

Devices per plan
Published simultaneous connections: Basic 10, Advanced 12, Express Pro 14. That is more flexible than NordVPN’s flat 10 across tiers, but still far from Surfshark’s unlimited devices on paid plans.
30-day money-back
ExpressVPN’s refund policy support article states a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time users who purchased directly from ExpressVPN (not via third-party stores unless that store’s policy says otherwise). Use the refund window if the apps or network do not fit — do not assume renewals or third-party purchases are covered the same way.
Cancellation
ExpressVPN publishes a cancel-subscription support article with steps for the website and apps. Cancel before the renewal date if you do not want the next annual charge. We are not restating every UI click here; follow the official cancel guide linked in Sources.
Key features
Lightway. ExpressVPN’s own VPN protocol. The company says the core library is open-sourced, written in Rust, includes post-quantum protection by default, and has been audited by Cure53 and Praetorian. Details: expressvpn.com/lightway.
TrustedServer. ExpressVPN markets RAM-only VPN servers so the OS is loaded fresh from a read-only image on each boot — a design claim, not something we re-verified in a lab. The Trust Center lists TrustedServer among the systems covered by past independent audits.
Privacy audit (KPMG). On June 25, 2025, ExpressVPN announced its third KPMG examination of TrustedServer and privacy-policy commitments as at February 28, 2025, under ISAE (UK) 3000 Type I. ExpressVPN says KPMG provided reasonable assurance with no identified issues regarding technical safeguards against activity logging. The full report is available after you acknowledge KPMG’s terms — useful if you want to read the auditor’s wording before you buy.
Jurisdiction. The privacy policy (last updated October 2, 2026) places Express Technologies Ltd in the British Virgin Islands and notes that personal data is controlled by ExpressVPN, not by ultimate holding company Kape Technologies PLC. That ownership fact is public; whether it matters to you is a personal risk call, not a score from us.
Advanced Protection. Available on Advanced and Pro (not the headline Basic VPN list). Blocks ads, trackers, malicious sites and adult sites while connected, per the pricing cards.
ExpressKeys. Password manager with built-in 2FA on Advanced and Pro.
ExpressMailGuard. Email relay / alias features that scale by tier (storage and alias counts differ on Basic vs Advanced/Pro).
Identity Defender. On Advanced and Pro: breach alerts, data-removal help and identity-theft insurance up to $3M (Advanced) or $5M (Pro), underwritten as listed on the pricing page. US eligibility and exclusions apply — read the summary of benefits.
ExpressAI. Pro-tier daily credit allowance for AI features ExpressVPN markets on that plan.
Split tunneling. Present on the features page we checked (route some apps outside the VPN).
What we did not find marketed as core features today: multi-hop and port forwarding were not present on the ExpressVPN features page capture we reviewed. If those are must-haves, check Surfshark (Dynamic MultiHop) or other providers’ docs — we do not invent feature lists.
We make no speed claims. We did not run timed tests.
Complaints and what the docs say
We do not scrape Reddit or Trustpilot star averages (those change hourly and are easy to cherry-pick). What we can say from ExpressVPN’s own pages:
- Price after the intro. The renewal lines ($99.95 / $119.95 / $199.95 a year) are printed on the pricing cards. If someone expected the $2.99-style average forever, the sticker shock is a documentation problem, not a surprise fee we invented. Cancel or use the first-time 30-day refund window before you are locked into renewal.
- Paying for unused extras. Advanced and Pro price in Advanced Protection, ExpressKeys, Identity Defender and (Pro) ExpressAI. If you only need a VPN tunnel, Basic is the plan the pricing page itself frames as the VPN-forward option.
- Device limits. Fourteen simultaneous connections on Pro is high for a premium VPN, but it is not unlimited. Households that rotate many phones, TVs and laptops should compare Surfshark’s unlimited-device claim before buying.
- Third-party purchases. The refund article distinguishes direct ExpressVPN purchases from third-party stores. Buy through a storefront and you follow that storefront’s refund rules.
None of that is a hands-on test result. It is how the published terms and plan cards read on October 23, 2026. If you want a second opinion grounded in the same pricing math — including when NordVPN or Surfshark win on devices or extras — use the alternatives section below and our NordVPN vs ExpressVPN comparison once it is live.
Pros and cons
Pros (from official docs)
- Clear Basic / Advanced / Pro pricing with intro total and renewal printed on the card.
- Device limit rises with tier (10 / 12 / 14).
- Recent KPMG ISAE (UK) 3000 Type I assessment of privacy commitments as at February 28, 2025 (announced June 25, 2025); full report after acknowledging KPMG terms.
- Lightway open-source core + published third-party audits (Cure53, Praetorian) listed on the Trust Center.
- 30-day money-back for first-time direct buyers.
Cons (from official docs and plan shape)
- Renewal still lifts the bill vs the intro monthly average — budget $99.95+ a year after month 28.
- Basic omits Advanced Protection, ExpressKeys and Identity Defender; paying for Advanced/Pro without using those extras wastes money.
- Device cap tops out at 14 — households with more gadgets may prefer unlimited-device rivals.
- British Virgin Islands jurisdiction and Kape Technologies PLC ultimate holding are facts some privacy readers want to weigh (privacy policy, updated October 2, 2026).
Who should (and shouldn’t) buy ExpressVPN

Good fit
- You want a VPN-forward Basic plan with a relatively flat premium renewal among big brands.
- You will use Advanced Protection, ExpressKeys or Identity Defender — then Advanced (or Pro) can make sense.
- You prefer opening a recent auditor report after terms, before committing long-term.
Poor fit
- You need unlimited devices → look at Surfshark.
- You want the lowest intro + renewal among these three → Surfshark Starter on today’s numbers.
- You want antivirus + password manager + cloud storage in one Nord-style suite → NordVPN Complete / Prime (see Is NordVPN worth it?).
- You refuse BVI / Kape ownership on principle → consider Proton VPN (Proton VPN review).
Use a VPN for privacy and security on networks you do not control, such as public Wi-Fi — see best VPN for public Wi-Fi. For budget picks, see best cheap VPN.
ExpressVPN alternatives
NordVPN. Basic $94.23 for 27 months, renews $139.08/year; Complete $107.73 then $219.48/year; 10 devices on every tier; Deloitte no-logs report issued December 12, 2025 (sixth engagement; Nord Account required for the full report). Stronger when you want Complete/Prime extras (antivirus, password manager, 1 TB storage, US ID insurance on Prime). Full head-to-head: our NordVPN vs ExpressVPN comparison (publishing alongside this review).
Surfshark. Starter/One $67.23 for 27 months; Starter renews $79/year; unlimited devices. Cheapest long-run path among the three on today’s US pages. Reminder: Surfshark and NordVPN share Nord Security ownership. See also NordVPN vs Surfshark.

How we evaluated
We read ExpressVPN’s official pricing/order page, features page, Trust Center, Lightway page, privacy policy, refund policy and cancel-subscription article (US view, USD), and recorded the date and time in BRT. Alternative prices came from NordVPN and Surfshark official US pages the same day (Surfshark renewal table from a same-day US capture at 01:14 BRT). We did not run our own speed, streaming, leak or hands-on tests, and we do not invent search-volume or Trustpilot-score claims. Opinions are marked as opinions. This is general information, not legal advice.
FAQ
Is ExpressVPN worth it in 2026?
Our opinion: Basic can be, if you value apps, a published KPMG check and a $99.95 renewal more than the absolute lowest price. On intro-plus-one-renewal math, Basic lands around $4.59 a month over 40 months before tax — higher than Surfshark Starter (~$3.75 over 39 months) but lower than NordVPN Basic (~$5.98 over 39 months). Advanced/Pro are worth it only if you use their extras. Otherwise Surfshark or NordVPN may fit better.
How much does ExpressVPN cost after renewal?
On October 23, 2026 (US/USD): Basic $99.95/year, Advanced $119.95/year, Express Pro $199.95/year, before tax, after the 28-month intro.
How many devices does ExpressVPN allow?
Basic 10, Advanced 12, Express Pro 14 simultaneous connections.
Does ExpressVPN have a money-back guarantee?
Yes — 30 days for first-time users who bought directly from ExpressVPN, per the official refund policy. Third-party store purchases follow that store’s rules.
ExpressVPN vs NordVPN vs Surfshark — quick take?
ExpressVPN Basic: flattest premium renewal of the two premiums today. NordVPN: deeper security suite on Complete/Prime. Surfshark: unlimited devices and lowest Starter bill. NordVPN and Surfshark share a parent group.
How do I cancel ExpressVPN?
Follow ExpressVPN’s official cancel-subscription support article (website and apps). Cancel before renewal if you do not want the next annual charge.
Verdict
ExpressVPN remains a premium-priced VPN with a clearer 2026 plan ladder than older “one expensive plan” reviews imply. Basic is the plan most readers should evaluate first. Move up only for documented extras. If devices or price dominate, Surfshark; if suite extras dominate, NordVPN.
