Our picks
Most homes now have more than five always-on gadgets. A VPN that caps you at a handful of simultaneous connections forces you to log devices out constantly. This guide ranks services by the official simultaneous connection limit first, then router support and price—so you can cover phones, laptops and shared Wi-Fi without guessing. Best VPNs for multiple devices
1. Surfshark: best overall for unlimited devices
Surfshark’s support docs state you can use unlimited simultaneous connections on Starter, One and One+, and that you may share a subscription with family members under one account (Surfshark support). The pricing FAQ repeats that unlimited simultaneous device connections cover a whole household; a free trial is limited to 3 devices until it ends (Surfshark pricing). Fair-use language still applies: Surfshark says it may limit abusive high-volume use (for example unauthorized resale). Antivirus on Surfshark is capped separately: its terms of service say the antivirus “allows a maximum of five simultaneous connections” (Surfshark terms, checked October 16, 2026); VPN connections are the unlimited part.
Pricing (checked October 16, 2026): long Starter/One offers showed $2.49/mo ($67.23 for the first 27 months on the page we loaded); One+ showed $4.49/mo ($121.23 for the first 27 months). 30-day money-back. Renewal prices after the intro term are higher—confirm the renewal line at checkout (pricing).
Watch out for: Surfshark and NordVPN are both under Nord Security. Unlimited VPN connections do not mean unlimited antivirus seats.
2. Private Internet Access: unlimited, open source
PIA states unlimited simultaneous device connections on a single subscription and recommends a router setup when a home network has many devices so the household can share one VPN tunnel (PIA help, PIA home). Apps are open source; PIA cites a no-logs policy reviewed in independent audits. Terms still prohibit abusing unlimited connections (resale, non-personal use).
Pricing (checked October 17, 2026): monthly $11.95; 1-year $3.99/mo billed $47.88 (renews at $47.88/yr); 3-year plan $2.03/mo (autorenews at $79 every 3 years). 30-day money-back for new subscribers (PIA).
Watch out for: the cheapest sticker is the multi-year plan; check what you’ll pay on renewal.
3. IPVanish: unlimited devices, clear renewal numbers
IPVanish says it does not meter concurrent connections or app installs—one plan can protect every device you own at once—and lists “Unlimited Devices” / “Unmetered Devices” on its pricing and FAQ pages (IPVanish pricing). It documents router use for smart electronics and IoT that lack native apps. Independent no-logs audits are claimed on the same page.
Pricing (checked October 16, 2026): Essential 2-year from $2.19/mo ($52.56 for the first 2 years); yearly Essential $3.89/mo ($46.68 first year). After the intro term, Essential renews at $99.99/year (Complete $109.99/yr, Advanced $129.99/yr per FAQ). 30-day money-back (pricing).
Watch out for: intro vs renewal gap is large; budget the $99.99/year Essential renewal if you keep the plan.
4. NordVPN: solid cap at 10 devices
NordVPN’s pricing page states 10 devices secured at once—ten simultaneous connections on one account (NordVPN pricing). That is enough for many small households if you don’t VPN every IoT gadget individually. For a head-to-head with Surfshark on features beyond device count, see NordVPN vs Surfshark.
Pricing (checked October 16, 2026): Basic long plan from $3.49/mo ($94.23 for the first 27 months), renews at $139.08/year; 1-year Basic from $5.49/mo ($65.88 first 12 months). 30-day money-back (pricing).
Watch out for: if you routinely need more than 10 simultaneous tunnels, pick an unlimited plan or put the home network on a router VPN (see below) so one connection covers many devices.
5. Proton VPN: 10 on paid plans, 1 on Free
Proton VPN Plus and Proton Unlimited include protecting 10 devices at once; Proton Free is 1 device at a time (Proton VPN pricing). Paid plans add higher speeds and a larger server footprint. Open-source apps and a no-logs stance are central to Proton’s pitch.
Pricing (checked October 16, 2026): VPN Plus from $3.49/mo ($83.76 billed for the first 24 months, then renews at $83.88 every 12 months on the offer shown). 30-day money-back on paid plans (pricing).
Watch out for: Free is fine for one phone, not for a family. Ten simultaneous connections matches NordVPN’s paid cap—not unlimited.
How many devices do you actually need?

Count simultaneous connections, not how many apps you installed:
- Phones and tablets that stay connected all day
- Work and personal laptops
- A desktop that stays on
- Travel devices that connect away from home (these still need their own app slots if the home router is the only tunnel)
Router math: installing a VPN on a compatible router typically counts as one connection toward the provider’s limit while covering every device on that Wi-Fi. PIA and IPVanish explicitly recommend router setups for busy homes (PIA help, IPVanish pricing FAQ). That is useful for privacy on shared home Wi-Fi and for gadgets without a VPN app. For setup options, see best VPN for router.
When 10 is enough: two adults, a couple of kids’ phones and two laptops often fit under NordVPN or Proton Plus—especially if smart TVs and consoles stay off the VPN or sit behind a router tunnel.
When unlimited helps: roommates, many always-on phones, frequent guests, or you refuse to manage a device list.
Family setup tips
- One household account. Surfshark’s support page says you can share login details with family for unlimited simultaneous use. Always read each provider’s terms: resale and non-personal commercial sharing are commonly banned (PIA states this explicitly).
- Apps where they exist. Install on phones and computers directly; use a router for devices without a solid app. For iPhone/iPad specifics, see best VPN for iPhone and iPad.
- Public Wi-Fi. Kids and travelers on café or hotel Wi-Fi benefit most from an always-on app with a kill switch—see best VPN for public Wi-Fi.
- Passwords separately. A VPN does not replace a shared family password manager: best password manager for families.

Beyond the VPN
Extras outside this ranking (not scored on device limits):

How we evaluated
We ranked primarily on each provider’s official simultaneous connection limit, then on whether they document router/network coverage, transparency claims (no-logs / open source where stated), and current intro plus renewal pricing. All figures come from official pricing pages and support articles checked October 16, 2026. We have not run our own multi-device lab test or speed suite for this guide, and we do not invent device caps. Fair-use / anti-abuse clauses mean “unlimited” is not a license to resell connections.
FAQ
Can I use one VPN on multiple devices? Yes. Every VPN here allows more than one device; the difference is the simultaneous cap (unlimited vs 10 vs 1 on Proton Free).
Which VPN allows unlimited devices? Surfshark, Private Internet Access and IPVanish all state unlimited or unmetered simultaneous connections on a single subscription (subject to fair-use / anti-abuse terms).
Does a VPN on my router count as one device? Providers that discuss router setups treat the router tunnel as a way to cover many LAN devices under fewer account connections—often effectively one connection for the network. Confirm in each provider’s router docs.
Is a VPN for multiple devices safe for a family? Using one household subscription is a common, supported pattern (Surfshark says so explicitly). It does not replace parental controls, good passwords or caution on public Wi-Fi.
Can I share my VPN account with family? Often yes within a household; commercial resale or mass sharing is typically forbidden. Read the terms for your provider.
What happens if I exceed the device limit? On capped plans (NordVPN, Proton paid at 10; Proton Free at 1), a new connection usually fails or kicks an older session until you disconnect something. Unlimited plans avoid that ceiling for normal household use.
Verdict
For most families and multi-device homes, Surfshark is the simplest pick: unlimited simultaneous VPN connections and a low intro rate. Private Internet Access and IPVanish also offer unlimited connections if you prefer those brands’ pricing or open-source stance. Choose NordVPN or Proton VPN when 10 simultaneous connections are enough and you want those ecosystems’ extras—or put the house on a router VPN so one slot covers the LAN.
